Trying to update Vista Home Premium to Ultimate but install stops because necessary files are missing. How do I get around this?

Is Home Premium activated?
Are you installing Ultimate from a genuine Microsoft DVD?

Upgrading and/or updating can mean many things.
You have not provided enough information to do problem analysis.

Is the existing OS activated?
Are you installing from a genuine Microsoft DVD? an iso image? files copied to another volume?
All versions of Vista are on the distribution DVD.
The product key determines what features get installed.

Yes Vista was on Compaq laptop when bought. Have iso file from download. Was not given an install DVD when bought but had to make one from backup program.

There may be issues with the iso image.

Did you make a DVD from the iso?
Are the files that error actually on the installation media?

My only suggestion is that OEM versions of of the OS may not contain everything that a retail version does.
Where did the upgrade come from? Is it just a product key?
Upgrading in place from 32 bit to 64 bit is not possible. It requires a clean install.

Sorry I can't be more help. I've never seen this problem before.
I suggest you open an installation support case with Microsoft.
