Updates Problem

A friend of mine has given me a laptop to update. The problem is it's not been done for years, I think it's still at SP1 in XP Home Edition. The thing is, when I'm trying to use Microsoft Updates, the updates sometimes fail, but if they do download I am getting an error message saying the file is corrupt!

Any pointers perhaps ?!

Cheers
