Error code 80048820 usually occurs when there is a problem with the .NET Messenger service. one or more of the servers providing it might be down or having problems, with as result that you can no longer sign in. This normally won't take longer then a few minutes/hours.

Re: Error code 80048820 (by Subbha sadiq)

When you try and launch MSN Messenger and try to logon, you get an error message 80048820. A

wild guess, your system time / date needs adjusting.

The Cause of Code 80048820
There are a variety of causes of this error:

1) Incorrect Proxy Setting for Internet Explorer.

2) softpub.dll may have become unregistered.

3) Your system clock may be showing an incorrect time (or date!).

4) Firewall problems.

The Solutions to MSN Error Code 80048820
Internet Explorer - Try removing Internet Explorer proxy server settings and go with the

'Automatically detect settings'.

1) Launch Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
Click LAN Setting. Un check the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not

apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox. Finally positively tick: 'Automatically

date and time. (Check on the internet if possible.)

4) Turn off the firewall temporarily. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access

to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is

allowed full access through your firewall.

5) Try a password of no more than 8 characters.

6) If you are using IE 7.0 check the SSL Settings. Internet options advanced (Tab) scroll

down to the bottom. Security section. Tick 'Use ssl 2.0'.

6) Drastic! Try uninstalling MSN Messenger version 7.5 and install Microsoft MSN version

I have encountered such problem before on my newly build laptop.
I've tried every possible approaches but failed.
But finally I found the root cause: the system date was set 1 year behind after installing the Live Messenger. Then I just simply change the year setting and got fixed.
I was not sure if it's set by me unintentionally or it's just a software bug. As # 3 mentioned that it could be incorrect system date. But, it's very tricky that the day and time were both correct.
Anyway, you can simply check the date settings first.

The problem occurs is caused by the incorrect Microsoft Internet Explorer SSL settings. The error happens occasionally, and not all system may affected by this WLM problem. To solve the problem, following steps in the guide below:

1. In Internet Explorer, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click on the Tools menu, then click Internet Options in the pull down menu.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. Under “Security” section tree, clear the Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box.
5. Click OK button.
6. Exit Internet Explorer.
7. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
