The ITIL Alternative: ISO 20000 Foundation

At last: a credible alternative to ITIL and APMG's shenanigans. I'm talking about the EXIN's new ISO 20000 certification scheme of course: a hierarchy of certificates, from foundation upwards.

I am one of many people for whom ITIL has worn a little thin: over monetized, over regulated, and the last straw: the withdrawal of the foundation exam from Prometric. I couldn't believe that last one, just as I was about to take it.

This at last seems to present the viable alternative that has long been overdue. To make it even better, this individual certification stream fits with the international corporate service management standard (ISO20000).

The foundation level has now been released, with the rest to follow. And for those like myself who don't live in major cities, it IS at Prometric, and there IS a self study.

The following information explains the broad parameters:

ISO 20000 Certification Scheme

The latter site also offers a self study course:
ISO 20000 Foundation Course

This seems to have everything going for it, not least the relationship with ISO, the easy access, and the progression to further qualifications.

I'll be going for the foundation shortly, and will be watching this whole situation unfold with great interest.

Thanks for drawing this to our attention Vern. I've been asking around and from what I hear the implication is that ITIL will be back on Prometric sometime. There are plenty of vendors who would rather this didn't happen but I can't see how they can stop it. I'll bet they can delay it though. For more on this see http://www.itskeptic.org/node/484

Able to register today at Prometric for v2 Foundation

Vern,

I was able to register for the ISEB BH0-001-v2 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management today at Prometric. Is it just the new v3 exams that aren't allowed at Prometric? I searched the APMG web site for locations to take v3 exams, but most seem to be focused on UK locations, and a mention of a few possibilities outside the UK. I agree....this new examination process is not clear and very frustrating. Thanks for the tips on the alternatives.

Ed

The V3 exams were made available, then this was suspended

From a reader on the IT Skeptic blog:
The V2 exams have always been available on Pro-Metric. The V3 exams were made available, then this was suspended, as further moderation was required before results were released. We were told this should be only temporary (in February) so I would expect it to end very soon.

It took a bit longer than the implied of course, but it (ITIL v3) is now up and running at Prometric, as referenced in another thread. Hopefully the disruptions are now over and it will remain there. You can never be sure though with so many political and commercial interests involved.

Back to ISO 20000 Foundation, I have started to hear references to this here and there, so maybe it is starting to emerge.

Now there is a brand new website dedicated to the latest innovative approach to IT Service Management.

Is this about ISO 20000?
Definitively, but much more about quality ITSM and the people that manage the service provision. Becasue ITSM is all about people.
