Question partition recovery or DATA recovery ??

Can someone be upfront and tell me if the partition that XP's chkdsk scanned and 'fixed' that produced lots of .chk files can be recovered ? or is the data already over written ?

It happened this morning, I booted up like always and didn't pay attention on the screen, thinking it's a normal boot up then I wanted to play some music that I stored in my "media HD". To my horror I noticed two (out of 3) of my partitions are gone. One is working fine. By gone i mean the LABEL now reads "Local Disk" and I can access one but it's all .chk files. While the other Local Disk I'm unable to access (RAW).

For the RAW partitions I tried the Demo of Active Recovery and it listed my directories (in root) correctly. But somehow I can't seem to find a way to get into sub dirs to look for files.

Partition Table Doctor has lots of good reviews, etc I'm wondering if it can help me here. I've tried TestDisk, etc but to no avail.

My questions :

1. When do I chose between partition recovery (rebuilt) and DATA recovery ? I've lost partitions before and programs like TestDisk was able to 'rebuilt' the file structure (FAT, MFT) or what have you.

I'm thinking this is similar but unfortunately TestDisk can't fix it now saying"MFT and MFT mirror bad" or something like that.

2. My data in that chkdsk'd partitions, lost forever ?

Thanks

there is no way of undoing the changes done by chkdsk. You can
consult with data recovery firms and have them try to recover the lost
files beyond the 137GB barrier and try to reassemble the .chk files but
that will be a very expensive recovery job, if they can do it! If you
want to try this by yourself you can try Studio-R recovery software.

Was you able to recover the data. If you are still not able to get back your data then you can try Stellar Phoenix Windows Data recovery software a file and partition recovery utility. Stellar phoenix is powered by ‘Raw File Recovery’ feature that recognizes & recovers more than 300 file types including documents, spreadsheets, web content &images. Hope it will provide some help in recovering your data back.
First download the demo version from: http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm
