Problem with Searchable phone directory in Sharepoint

Hi,

The article "Building a Searchable Phone Directory with Windows SharePoint Services" is what I have been looking for. However, have some queries:

1) Can we build the phone directory with Sharepoint Portal?

2) Sharepoint Portal has this User Profile database. Can we extract the data from this database to build the phone directory.

Would appreciate if someone could advise.

There is a utility to import data from active directory into the profile database, but there is no live link between them.

My article is just an example of using the Data View Web Part, so I am sure that there are better directory solutions.
