How we can use technology to increase engagement

Does anyone have any input on how to can use technology to increase engagement (beyond Web 2.0 and social media)?

We're trying to identify key technology tools that drives (improves) engagement -- specifically how IT can help increase engagement.

could you be more specific as to what the end goal is? Engagement with what, and by whom?
