New Position and New Challenges

Hi all,

Im new to this forum... im looking for some guidance with some of the issues in my new job. I have been employed as a support analyst, which means doing some helpdesk support. The other half of my job however is to build up the documentation system for the company. The have introduced a new erp system (JDE) which spans multiple companies, each with different setups.

My objective is to provide a useful resource which can act as a guide in the event of employees not knowing how to do something. Currently a system already exists.... from what i can see it is a group of about 100-200 independant html pages based on a template. The pages have step by step instructions.

I am still currently in training - learning the new system - however i would like some input on some of my 'options'..

- What are my options for document management/control

- Can anyone provide some good 'public' examples of similiar systems, in order to gain ideas/knowledge?

- Is XML or PHP a good option? Should I look at storing documents within a database?

- How can I provide a good indexing system/ related links?

I would really like to provide a system which allows easy access to information - so that users can find what they are looking for in a mass of information.. like indexes, related links and a good menu structure.

I know this is probably an list of impossible questions from a beginner, however.. you have to start somewhere.

Many Thanks

AllanM

Thanks for the reply tdorey.

I would be interested in seeing some solutions.

I had a look at the vialect website, and it appears probably something a bit to large for what im looking for at this point in time. I would really think some design tips guides.

The reason is I would like to develop the system, in an oranised fashion. If I follow some guidlines, it may enable any future upgrades/ system implementations to be done smoothly and quickly, rather than from a whole bunch of html which could take some time.

Having said that, I would still be interested in seeing the possibilities of your systems and what they can do. Can you arrange this?

I would be interested to see what other people have to say about developing an in house solution. I would like a simple solution ( if possible)

Thanks Again

AllanM
