Question Is it worth it for my company to invest in a managed hosting company?

I own a small e-commerce that has been expanding. We're considering upgrading hardware and software. I've been paying some of my tech-savvy friends to manager my server. But finds are limited and we want to keep growing. Should we go with a hosting company sooner or later? Is it a good investing? Anybody have good experiences of note with hosting companies or sources of information?

It really boils down to economics.

Hosting companies provide the expertise to keep your site up and running and provide additional bandwidth as your needs grow. On the other hand, if you have on staff expertise and the ability to manage your bandwidth needs, including backup for server and circuit failures, keep the function in house.

Most sites use hosting companies, including the parent corporation of this site that runs many web oriented businesses from forums such as this one to content provider sites.

it also depends on how many hits a day you're expecting. If it's in the 20,000 range, you can do very well with managed hosting and spend a lot less money because you don't need a staff to manage the server and site. You would have to get way up in traffic before it would be necessary to get a dedicated server, which you most cases would have to manage yourself
