Victim of bad management

I'm a regular on the other forums, thought i might as well start in here as well.

I posted this rant on one of my other technology forums regarding an incident that basically forced me to decide to leave my job: http://www.hardcoreware.net/forum/ra...en-t29775.html

Thought i'd post it here and see what other managers thought of the situation. I will be giving my notice tomorrow but i wou;dn't mind some feedback on the situation. I'll check back to see responses and answer any asked questions.

My guess is that they'll be more candid about the complaint once you tell them you're quitting. Music actually makes me more productive. Obviously there are some tasks that I won't listen to music while doing, but so many of the repetitive, day-to-day responsibilities would be unbearable without a little music.

Not to trivialize the situation, but isn't this happening to Jim on The Office? It's supposed to be ridiculous on TV and is even more so in real life. Good luck.

In my view, this is a specific application of the topic in this discussion. How much concern for petty rules should a manager show? Personally, as I stated in that other thread, there are far more important factors to be considered.

Well, the only thing to really happen was they gave me 2 weeks severance rather then let me finish out. I talked to the CTO and My director and neither of them were aware of any complaints against me, they both had good things to say about my work and performance.

As i responded in the linked thread, i feel the complaint was fictitious and look forward to finding a better company.

I hope you find one. They are out there, but it takes both perseverance and luck to find one. Take my current job for instance, my boss trusts me, because he knows he can. He doesn't sweat the small stuff because he knows I will never let him down. Even if I'm on vacation or other days off, I always check the forums.

sorry to hear about this situation. I don't know the details, but often times a company WILL make things up to try to get rid of people. They do all the "work plan" stuff just to make sure they're covered. It stinks but that's the way the world works sometimes.

in my opinion, you should have known better than to have media locally on your machine. you probably signed some kind of IT usage policy when you started working for this company therefore, as you openly admitted, that is your fault. How often do you listen to music. Do you use headphones or do you play the music through your speakers? I used to get flack all the time until I got headphones. I keep the headphones loud enough to hear the phone and hear my boss if she makes an announcement and etc. It has saved me a lot. No one wants to be trying to work and hear your music. I know I wouldn't.

As far as the other things, it sounds like the company is either in cost cutting mode and can pay someone less money to do your job, or you did something to them whether it was deliberate or not that pissed them off. Now they are getting back at your for it.

Either way, you are better off. When you wake up every morning not wanting to go to your job, it's time to look for greener pastures.. I am about at that point myself.

Good luck man!

Well, it was almost nine months ago now, but from the sound of it someone was trying to clumsily liquidate the remains of Davis's team, and probably counted his leaving so fast as a stunning victory for their plan and an affirmation that they were indeed going about things the right way.
