The Apple Fanboy Dream Comes True

Mike Elgan suggests that Apple's move from niche status to mainstream carries a major downside.

Here's the article?

I agree with much of the article, especially the part about product changes to appeal to a wider range of customers. Apple has already changed to to mainstream hardware that allows Window to run on it. They are promoting that capability in widespread advertising campaigns.

IMO it won't be long before virtually all non-server hardware is generic and the business and consumer choices will be limited to the selection of software used for the tasks at hand.

It's difficult to say with any certainty because I have been a Windows user from my first experience with PCs. The only experience I had prior to the personal computer was in school, with a monochromatic screen and programming punch cards.

My cousin visited the other day with his Mac book, and I messed around with it a little. All the icons to open programs sitting in the toolbar I find rather annoying. Firstly, it's much more difficult to discern which one is for what program, as they are smaller and don't have descriptions beneath them, as the icons on my desktop do.

In addition these tiny little colored images for minimizing, maximizing and closing, are smaller and much more difficult to click on than a Windows program. Furthermore Windows programs you can close by clicking in either corner, left or right.

These are just some random impressions after using a Mac notebook for a few minutes.
