just a thought
Hi Karen - i work at a law firm, and our[my] basic organizational approach is, [a]remembering the words of the exec. dir. along with a "best practices for a corporate intranet" article, trying to use the "2 click rule" - get there in 2 clicks. that said, my menu items WERE on top and side, now only on left side. my buttons on the left are top to bottom: home, critical documents[document ref files from docs open to various docs like company handbook, holidays, floor maps, etc, etc], departments[hr, acct, marketing, it], general info[marketplace;photogallery], directory[firm pictorial dir], dining[firmOffice1,2,3], hotel[firmOffice1,2,3],entertainment[firmOffice1,2,3].
what are your thoughts? considering "content cornerstones": upToDate;Correct;Relevant;Timely... what are you thinking to add to yours, what kind of company are you, will you give the corporate look or something completely different? [stats show a split opinion in the industry it seems].
good luck - how are you building it? what tools, languages, technologies, framework/structure?
