We still need those CS people to write micro code, hardware driver code, bios code, ...
Those are all close to the metal and those are the pieces of code that are problematic in today's environment.
Try and find Win2k3, Vista or *nix 64 bit drivers for the TPM chip module or RFID devices.
Lack of these pieces of code have stopped many system implementations in their tracks, my own included.
